Ten
years ago, my brother, Gary, and I hunted on Dick
Smith's private property for the first time. Each
year since, we have returned to renew our pleasant
first experience. This private reserve offers
an abundance of pheasant, the occasional sharptail
grouse and even some prairie chicken. In
fact, when Gary brings his well-trained Alberta
hunting dogs to this south of Pierre country,
he usually spends the first day, calming excited
dogs that seldom encounter so much pheasant scent.
To be fair to our guide, however, I must add that
we have never focused on hunting sharptail and
prairie chicken. The pheasant pursuit has
always been the attraction. In our years of hunting
this property, we have always limited. Dick
has helped us clean our birds and even offers
a place for freezing them. He is most accommodating.
Dick Smith, our guide and mentor, hunts with his
clients. We have found him easily assessable,
considerate, and capable. He understands
the pheasant habitat and habits. With his
easy going personality and his well-trained hunting
dog, he provides a full package for the hunter.
If someone misses an easy shot, that is
okay. We simply go out and have fun.
It gives me great pleasure to recommend pheasant
hunting with Dick Smith. The birds, the
camaraderie, the knowledge, and skill all combine
to provide a great pheasant hunting experience.

Dear Dick,
I’m glad you have decided to share your pheasant
hunting with a greater number of sportsmen. What
an opportunity this will be for some lucky hunters!
I and a few of my friends have felt a bit guilty
having had almost exclusive use of your hospitality
for the last 40 years.
Little did I know when I guided your dad on
several Alaskan hunting trips that it would
lead to an exchange of hunting trips with you
also. You not only have a unique assortment
of terrain to hunt—grassy draws, cattail dams,
and grain fields—but your relaxed personality
will set even inexperienced hunters at ease
and enhance their experience. Now how far ahead
do I have to reserve a spot?
Sincerely,
Charles Gray Retired Alaska Master Guide #28

Dear Dick and all,
Congratulations on the opening of your new Pheasant
Creek lodge and hunting resort! We were afraid
that someday you would open up “our little peace
of personal paradise” to others.
As you know we are avid Mexicali Valley bird hunters
but have enjoyed the change of pace and challenge
that the beautiful South Dakota terrain offers.
We are always overwhelmed with the amount of quality
bird hunting available at your ranch, as well
as the hospitality you have shown. We look forward
to continuing our annual South Dakota pheasant
safari, so be sure to keep our spot reserved.
Thank you for the great times and if you would
like to expand your horizons and travel from your
exclusive little resort feel free to come hunt
the Mexicali Valley with us.
